Luxembourg to Host MeluXina-AI Supercomputer, Launch National AI Factory
Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy, the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, Luxprovide and Luxinnovation have announced that Luxembourg will host a supercomputer optimised for artificial intelligence (A) and launch a national AI Factory.
On 10 December 2024, Luxembourg took an important step towards digital leadership in Europe: the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking initiative selected the country to host the MeluXina-AI supercomputer optimised for artificial intelligence and the creation of an associated AI Factory. The project was approved by the government on 13 December and is part of the national strategy for AI, data and quantum technologies.
The supercomputer will be a powerful platform for data processing and the development of AI-based solutions. It will be hosted by LuxConnect SA's data centres in Bissen and Bettembourg. Half of the computing power will be used within the European EuroHPC network and the other half for national needs.
Key features of the project:
- Budget: €112 million.
- Objectives: developing Luxembourg's sovereign computing capacity, supporting research and corporate projects, attracting investment and talent.
- AI Factory: a platform for developing an AI ecosystem with a focus on innovation and collaboration between business and science.
The project is implemented by a consortium comprising LuxProvide SA, Luxinnovation, LNDS, the University of Luxembourg and LIST. LuxProvide SA is responsible for the management of MeluXina-AI, while Luxinnovation coordinates AI Factory's work to support startups and enterprises.
